Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is another method to treat conditions such as:

  • Acne
  • Rosacea breakouts
  • Enlarged oil glands
  • Sebaceous hyperplasia
  • Severely sun-damaged skin
  • Irregular pigmentation
  • Sunspots
  • Uneven skin texture
The treatment requires use of a photosensitizing medication called aminolevulinic acid (ALA), which targets sun-damaged cells and active acne sebaceous glands responsible for producing oil.  The sebaceous glands shrink and acne bacteria is killed with this treatment.  No oral medications are required, eliminating the side effects associated with oral antibiotics and AccutaneHowever, proper home care products and topical medications may be necessary to maintain results.

The medication is applied to the treatment area for 60-90 minutes before activated by an Intense Pulse Light laser like device. The cells that have absorbed the medication are more susceptible to destruction by the application of the light energy.

Required number of treatments for optimal results depends on the patient and the severity of the skin condition being treated. Sun avoidance is mandatory for 48 hours after each treatment, and redness can be expected to last 2 to 3 days.  Peeling can also occur after treatments.
