Even though visible facial veins are not harmful, many of our patients would like to be rid of these unattractive and sometimes embarrassing distractions to their natural beauty.
Fortunately, advanced technologies enable us to safely, easily and effectively treat facial veins, also called telangiectasia, spider veins, spider angiomas and vascular lesions.
What causes facial veins?
Formation of facial veins is often related to heredity, oral contraceptives, hormone therapy, sun exposure and the natural process of ageing. They may also be related to rosacea, another treatable skin condition. Other causes include liver disease, steroid use, and radiation therapy.
How can facial veins be treated?
The best treatment for small visible veins is laser therepy. Lasers deliver high energy light that is absorbed by the blood within the blood vessel. This light destroys the blood vessel, gradually restoring the skin's natural appearance.
Do treatments hurt?
There is a snapping sensation as the laser light energy is delivered to the skin to eradicate the vessel.
How many treatments will I need?
Typically, multiple treatments are necessary to achieve optimal results. Tiny pink and red vessels usually require 1-2 treatments to achieve acceptable results. Veins that are darker or purplish are usually more difficult to remove and require more treatments. Treatments are spaced at 3-4 week intervals.
How long do treatments take?
Treatment time depends on the number of vessels treated and their location. In general, the procedure takes only minutes.
Will the veins return after treatment?
Over time, it is possible for new veins to grow in, but these too can be treated.
More Information
Lasers are safe, producing gradual results. Laser therapy has very few side effects. Temporary discoloration of the affected skin may result from treatments. This discoloration can last anywhere from 5-14 days depending on the location, size, and type of vein being treated.
The use of sunscreen on the treated area is recommended for optimum results. It is also mandatory to avoid anything that causes flushing of the skin for a minimum of 72 hours after treatment. This includes exercise, hot showers, hot tubes, alcohol and spicy foods.
