Skin resurfacing can be performed on three different levels (superficial, medium & deep) to achieve subtle to dramatic results. Each level provides a different end result, adjustable to target specific cosmetic concerns and affordable downtime for recovery.
MicroLaserPeel (MLP) refers to the precise removal of the outermost superficial layers of skin (10-50 micron depths), which is replaced by younger skin growth with smoother texture, less pigmentation and softening of fine lines.
This treatment is more aggressive than a microdermabrasion, which typically removes less than 10 micron depths and is much more operator dependent to achieve consistent results. Microdermabrasion is an ideal "polishing" type procedure without long-term effects as compared to MicroLaserPeel.
In contrast, deeper laser skin resurfacing (>50 micron depth) is reserved for textural scars (such as acne scars) and mature skin with "etched in" wrinkles (particularly around the mouth and eyes). See Skin Resurfacing.
Recommended number of MLP treatments depends on desired goals, pretreatment condition of the skin and nature of the problem to be corrected: wrinkles, problems with pigmentation or textural issues. Treatments can be performed 4-6 weeks apart. Downtime depends on the peel's depth. In many cases, depth of the peel is governed by the amount of free time the patient has to dedicate to "social" downtime. A "weekend peel" of 10 micron depth is generally associated with only 2-3 days of peeling. A more aggressive peel of 20-30 microns may take 5-7 days of downtime (peeling & healing). Healing time tends to vary from person to person.
A topical anesthetic is applied for 30 minutes before the actual laser treatment which takes about 15 minutes. A popping sound is heard during the treatment. The skin is red and a sunburn feeling is expected immediately after the procedure. Mild swelling may occur on rare occasion. Itching is common as the skin heals. Overall, patients do not usually experience significant post-procedure discomfort. The skin remains red or appears to have a faint caramel color the day after and feels tight. Peeling generally begins two days after the treatment. Keeping the skin moist with balm or a heavy moisturizer is imperative for the healing process. Special home care kits are dispensed for peels of 20 microns or more depth. Non-irritating, high grade mineral makeup (such as GloMinerals) is recommended once the peeling is complete. Use of a physical sunscreen is mandatory. You should also avoid unnecessary sun exposure and tanning products for at least 4 weeks post-procedure.
Risk of long term discoloration is extremely rare because very little heat is placed into the skin. There is risk of causing a flare of herpes simplex (cold sores) in people who are prone to cold sores. Therefore, pretreatment with an antiviral medication is recommended before and after the procedure to decrease the risk of an outbreak.
You can expect immediate change in skin texture and firmness. Amount of improvement varies from person to person. Genetic factors, consistent use of quality home skin care, and the depth of each MLP will affect the degree of improvement. The skin continues to improve over 6 months due to increased collagen production in the deeper layers of the skin. The result is younger, healthier skin.
