The treatment requires use of a photosensitizing medication called aminolevulinic acid (ALA), which targets sun-damaged cells and active acne sebaceous glands responsible for producing oil.
The medication is applied to the treatment area for 60-90 minutes before activated by laser light. The cells that have absorbed the medication are more susceptible to destruction by the application of the light energy.
Required number of treatments for optimal results depends on the patient and the severity of the skin condition being treated. Sun avoidance is mandatory for 48 hours after each treatment, and redness can be expected to last 2 to 3 days. Peeling can also occur after treatment.
